Archbishop calls for prayer after refugee tragedy
The Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Peter Jensen, has called on churches to pray during this Sunday's services for those affected by the Christmas Island refugee tragedy and for aid workers, public servants and governments who deal with refugees.
Dr Jensen called the loss of life and injury in the boat disaster on Wednesday "heartbreaking and tragic'.
"We must pray for families and friends who are grieving and for those injured, and the survivors and witnesses who have been traumatised by the events surrounding this tragedy."
Archbishop Jensen is also asking churches to pray for Australians involved in caring for refugees and the Prime Minister, government and MP's who set refugee policy.
"Our leaders bear the burden of responsibility in a difficult situation. The desperation of many asylum seekers drives them into the hands of the unscrupulous. We must pray for wisdom for those who serve Australia in this area."
