Sydney Synod meets today: will discuss the Anglican Communion and an
Affiliated Churches Ordinance
The Synod of the Diocese of Sydney will meet again this afternoon at 3.15pm
in the Wesley Theatre, 220 Pitt Street, Sydney. The Synod will meet under
the chairmanship of the Dr Peter Jensen, the Archbishop of Sydney. The final
day of meeting for 2005 will be tomorrow, 18th October, also in the Wesley
Theatre.
The major item of interest this afternoon will be the Affiliated Churches
Ordinance 2005 which will be taken at 4.30pm. The debate on this Ordinance
will be led by Dean Phillip Jensen.
This Ordinance was requested by Synod in 2004. It seeks to provide an avenue
and structure by which non-Anglican churches might be recognised as
associated churches of the Diocese. Synod in 2004 also asked for a
discussion of the benefits that may arise for both the Diocese and those
churches by reason of such association.
From 8.00pm this evening, Synod will debate the present situation in the
worldwide Anglican Communion. It will also consider the recent ARCIC
(Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission) Statement ‘Mary: Grace
and Hope in Jesus Christ’.
Media are welcome to film, record and photograph the proceedings of the
Synod.
