Sydney Synod will debate the Anglican Communion today

The Synod of the Diocese of Sydney will meet again today from 3.15pm. Synod meets in the Wesley Theatre, 220 Pitt Street, Sydney.

At 7.00pm this evening the Synod Mission Hour will be held. The special guest at Synod for this event and the following debate will be the Primate of South East Asia, the Most Rev. John Chew, who is the Archbishop of Singapore.

The major debate to be held today at 8.00pm will be focussed on the Anglican Communion. The Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Peter Jensen will make a statement to the Synod concerning the Anglican Communion. This will be followed by debate on the following motion:

"Synod commends the Primates of the Global South** for their forthright stand in upholding biblical truth and expresses its support and encouragement for all within the Anglican Communion who are seeking to uphold biblical principles and prays for the Archbishop of Canterbury in his difficult role."

**The term "the Primates of the Global South" refers to Archbishops and Bishops, mainly from Africa, South Asia, South East Asia and South America who have been opposed to decisions and actions of the Episcopal Church of the United States, and also some sections of the Anglican Church of Canada. These matters include the US consecration as Bishop of a practising homosexual clergyman who has a same-gender partner, and also US and Canadian dioceses allowing for the blessing of same-gender relationships. Archbishop John Chew is Secretary of the Global South group.

This afternoon, if time permits before 4.30pm, Synod may be debating a private member's motion on the funding of Anglican chaplaincies in hospitals and jails, and also a motion on affiliated churches, ie non-Anglican congregations that wish to have relationship with the Diocese of Sydney. From 4.30pm until the dinner hour Synod will debate ordinances that are related to the internal organisation of the congregations.
