Several prominent Sydney Anglicans are recipients in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Those appointed Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia included Justice Peter Young for service to law. Justice Young has been a member of the Sydney Standing Committee since 1978.
Also appointed an AO was Jennifer Blackman for her service to the law, particularly as a supporter of the advancement of women. She has served in a range of church, youth and aged care organisations.
The Rt Rev Arthur Malcolm was appointed an AO for service to the Indigenous communities. He was a Church Army officer at St Michael’s, Surry Hills prior to becoming Australia’s first Indigenous Bishop.
Those appointed Member (AM) of the Order of Australia include Jo Karaolis for her service to education. From 1988 to 2000 she was headmistress of St Catherine’s School, Waverley.
Roderick West was appointed an AM for his service to education in curriculum development and as Headmaster of Trinity Grammar School. He has been a trustee and member of Moore College since 1984.
Leonie Burgess and Thomas Mayne were both awarded Medals (OAM) of the Order of Australia. Mrs Burgess has served as a chaplain and in ministry to the aged for 14 years. She is also involved with the Bush Church Aid Society. Mr Mayne received his OAM for service to the Indigenous community, particularly in the area of reconciliation. He is a member of the Sydney Anglican Indigenous People’s Committee.
Justice John Dyson Heydon was appointed a Companion of The Order of Australia for his service to the law. He was appointed Justice of the High Court in February 2003 and attends St James’, Turramurra.
