A modest Chinese woman who has helped to strengthen the heart of Asian worship in Anglican churches has received the congratulations of the Queen in this year’s honours list.
Yuke Lan Woo, the wife of the Rev John Woo, has been developing Chinese Bible studies and English language courses through local congregations for decades.
This Queen’s Birthday she received recognition for her day to day duties as a Christian.
"It was a surprise because you don’t really expect this sort of thing," Mrs Woo told Sydneyanglicans.net as she considered the ceremony she will be attending today where she will receive a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
Informed of her award weeks before, she says she has been doing her best to keep the secret.
"I’m not supposed to tell my family anything till Monday, but I think they’ve got some idea because of all the strange phone calls," she says.
Mrs Woo says her efforts to establish Christian contact with Sydney's Chinese community date from her husband's appointment as rector of St John's Anglican Church, Campsie.
"At that time the congregation was mostly Anglo Saxon, but outside of the church the community was very multicultural," she recalls.
"So we reached out to these people with English as a second language courses. We trained the congregation up and sent them out as tutors to contact the community. We were one of the earliest ones to start such a ministry."
Pioneering work continues to bless
The Rev Jeremy Tonks says the work the Woos later established at St Martin's, Kensington is still bearing fruit.
"Yuke Lan ran a fortnightly Chinese Bible study on a Sunday, even while she was recovering from breast cancer," he says.
"That was really important for the people had come to church to learn English. They'd come to learn a language but they came to realise that there's much more to life than communicating."
Mr John Woo and his wife Yuke Lan officially retired from Kensington in 2004 but have continued their Gospel efforts by undertaking locum work in Malaysia.
"There would be a number of people here who would remember them very fondly," Mr Tonks says, "And we’re still doing the English classes they started."
