The Deaf finally have much-needed access to God's word on DVD via the production of the first major Bible translation into Auslan, Australian sign language.
"This [is a] very important translation program which enables the Deaf to have the Bible in their own language," says biblical consultant Dr John Harris.
The Bible Society of Australia is producing the Auslan Bible on DVD, which will include an entirely new translation of the book of Acts.
There is no one universal sign language and Auslan is a distinct language.
The DVD is the first of a four-part set containing the gospels and stories from the Old Testament, which the Bible Society hopes will be available by mid-2006.
The Bible Society is working with Total Visual Solutions at the Anglican Media studios to produce this first DVD, which will be available by Christmas.
