As Connect09 continues, Archbishop Peter Jensen is calling on Sydney Anglicans to meet with him to pray on Friday this week.
The prayer meeting will be held in St Andrew's Cathedral this Friday (May 22) from 10am to 2.30pm, with a ‘CBD spot’ from 1"1.30pm dedicated to prayer for the CBDs across the Diocese.
In his monthly column, the Archbishop has reiterated that when people come to know God, "spiritual warfare on a grand scale" occurs.
For this reason, a prayer meeting is the right response to the challenge Connect09 presents as Sydney Anglicans continue to hand out the word of God.
"If we are hoping that somehow there is to be a great movement to God in our generation it is hardly likely to be as a response to tepid and half-hearted prayer by Christians. But I sometimes fear that this is all we have time for," Archbishop Jensen says.
"By agreeing to meet together like this we encourage each other and are more fervent in our prayers. This is the sort of assault which Satan dreads."
Connect, Expect: What’s missing?
As he encourages Sydney Anglicans to join him to pray for our neighbours, and the region of Sydney as a whole, Archbishop Jensen says we must not omit the crucial first word of the Connect09 slogan.
"As we hand out God's word we must be praying that the spirit of God will take the word of God and make new children of God," he says.
Archbishop Jensen has said a focused prayer meeting at this stage of Connect09 is "essential" and has asked that as many Sydney Anglicans as possible join him there.
"It may mean taking a day off work or making a special effort to get to the Cathedral. But I don't know why we should think that God will bless our people if we will not pray for them."
The Archbishop has spoken of the "miracles" he has seen in his own conversations in response to prayer.
"I have been astonished at the readiness of people to talk about faith and I am sure that this is a result of the Lord going before me into situations."
While he has accepted many will be unable to attend, the Archbishop indicates he is looking forward to praying alongside fellow Sydney Anglicans on Friday.
"Wouldn't it be marvellous to see the Lord truly answering our prayers and many many people becoming Christians all around the city. That's what we'll be praying for."
