Archbishop Peter Jensen’s weekly online series on The Essential Jesus (the gospel of Luke). In each study the Archbishop will lead us through the book we intend on giving away to as many people as possible.
STEP 1: READING
Read Luke chapter 21, verses 1-38.
STEP 2: REFLECTION
Bad enough that the teaching and actions of Jesus exposed the hypocrisy of the leadership. Now he spoke of the end of the temple and of Jerusalem and beyond that of the ultimate end of all things. Naturally those listening wanted to know when these events would be. Jesus gave an overview of what history has left, however long it runs: it will be wars and rumours of wars, earthquakes, famines and plagues and destruction and persecution. So it proved, immediately and from then on. As far as the pivotal event of the destruction of Jerusalem is concerned, this too would occur in this generation (as it did). But however long history lasts, the attitude of the disciples must be the same: you must watch and pray; you must be ready at all times for the coming of the kingdom. Watch for the coming of Son of Man.
STEP 3: DISCUSSION
1 How long will it be before the Son of Man returns? Does it matter?
2What sort of things leave you unprepared for the return of Jesus?
3 How can you reconcile the promise of Jesus, 'not a hair of your head will be lost' with the reality of martyrdom?
