STEP 1: READING
Read Luke chapter 23, verses 1-37.
STEP 2: REFLECTION
Rejected by his own. And by us, represented by Pilate and Herod, the soldiers and the crowd. All our human sins were there when they crucified the Lord. Some startling moments: Jesus silent before Herod; the friendship between Herod and Pilate forged by sin; Jesus the substitute for the guilty Barabbas; the injustice of human justice; the apocalyptic words of Jesus to the women - in the midst of an apocalyptic event; Jesus prays for the forgiveness of his murderers; the ridicule of leaders and soldiers; the irony that everything they said was true; the fact that he could have rescued himself, but chose not to for our sake; the miracle when the criminal beside him, utterly helpless, admits his sin and becomes the last one to turn to Jesus before his death; the precious words of Jesus to the dying man. Was there ever a man like this?
STEP 3: DISCUSSION
1 What sins put Jesus to death?
2 What elements of the story show us that this is more than merely the death of another innocent man?
3 How is the kingly nature of Jesus shown in the story. Why does this matter? What does it tell us about the death of Jesus and the coming of the kingdom of God?
