Archbishop Peter Jensen’s weekly online series on The Essential Jesus (the gospel of Luke). In each study the Archbishop will lead us through the book we intend on giving away to as many people as possible.

STEP 1: READING

Read Luke chapter 23, verses 44-56.

STEP 2: REFLECTION
Men killed Jesus. But in fact it is the Father's will. Why? There is his darkness at noon for three hours. The curtain of the temple was torn down the middle. Jesus dies committing himself to the Father. The cross was his throne. Here he is the king who dies for the salvation of his people. From now on, the religion of animal sacrifice and the old Law and the Old Testament has done its work in explaining and foreshadowing what God was doing when his Son died.  From now on, access to God is through the Son of God and his death on the cross. Through that sacrifice comes forgiveness, and relationship with God as Father and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is truly dead. His body is watched closely from the cross to the tomb. Friends hopelessly believe that its future is corruption.

STEP 3: DISCUSSION
1 Why has the cross become the symbol of Christianity?
2 Where is the Christian temple, sacrifice, altar and priest?
3 What is the connection between the death of Jesus and forgiveness of sins?
