When Nathan Tasker entered the Southern Hemisphere's richest song writing competition, he knew the 1000 other entrants would be tough to beat.
So it was a "massive surprise' when he heard his own song on the Pacific Songwriting Competition website when he checked last month to see who had been awarded Songwriter of the Year.
The 29-year-old from Christ Church, St Ives says it's even more surprising because the judges of the secular competition chose his song, "I Was There', which is "one of the most explicitly Christians songs I've ever written'.
"I Was There' is from Nathan's latest album, A Look Inside. He won $10,000 in prize money.
"It's exciting and humbling, but it doesn't change much," Nathan said.
"These days, my goal is to share a beautiful and believable Jesus through my music."
The musician will fly to Nashville, Tennessee this month to record a new album, which will be released in November.
